Winter weather in the U.S. typically means cold, dry conditions that can aggravate your skin. You need homemade skin care, which include natural remedies for every skin condition. Here are just a few ideas that are easy and affordable to help you create home remedies for acne and other skin conditions that you may find yourself dealing with.
Affordable skin care
Taking care of your skin doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. There are plenty of remedies you can find right in your own kitchen or at the nearest grocery store.
- Acne: According to SkinCareAllWomensTalk.com, actress Scarlett Johansson swears by an apple cider vinegar face wash as a remedy. “Ladies with normal skin can dab some ACV on the blemish before going to sleep and those with sensitive skin can mix one part ACV with one part water.”
- Pore minimizer: Blend half a tomato with a tablespoon of plain yogurt, apply to skin and rinse off after 5-10 minutes. Follow up with a moisturizer.
- Dry skin: Mash half an avocado with a quarter cup of honey, apply to your face and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water.
Michael Franco of Discovery Fit and Health provided the “Top 5 Moisturizing Home Remedies,” which included:
- Buttermilk: “That’s because buttermilk contains lactic acid, one of the hyrdoxy acids.[…] These compounds act as exfoliants on the skin, breaking apart and removing dry, dead skin cells so fresher, younger, moister ones can come to the fore,” Franco explained.
- Butter: Shea butter can also alleviate eczema, sunburn and insect bites. Look for products that are 100 percent shea butter and don’t use any product that is older than 18 months.
- Olive oil: This oil is good for your body — both inside and out. When used as a moisturizer it has been shown to be effective for rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.
Honey also makes Franco’s list because it is a natural humectant drawing water molecules from the air toward your skin.
Stop sabotaging your skin
All the natural ingredients in the world won’t help your skin if you keep harming it with your bad habits. In a February 6, 2014 post for MarioBadescu.com titled, “7 Ways To Sabotage Your Skin,” contributor Lee Ann outlined how you may be causing your skin problems.
The list includes:
- Picking, touching, or squeezing your skin
- Not washing your face frequently enough
- Skipping out on sleep
- Indulging in too much caffeine and alcohol
“Sure, it’s a treat to sip cocktails and lattes, but going overboard with any alcoholic or caffeinated beverage can take its toll on beautiful skin and leave it looking dehydrated and dull. For each glass or cup you drink, replenish your body with a glass of water,” Lee Ann stated.
Advice from the doctor
The Mayo Clinic staff came up with several suggestions for positive behaviors that can improve your skin in their article for MayoClinic.org titled, “Skin care: 5 tips for healthy skin.”
Here are their tips:
- Protect yourself from the sun: use sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 15
- Don’t smoke: smoking makes you look older and increases wrinkles
- Be gentle with your skin: avoid harsh soaps, limit your exposure to hot water when washing, pat dry and moisturize
- Eat healthy: eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins
- Manage stress: stress can trigger breakouts
The Mayo staff suggested, “Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The results might be more dramatic than you expect.”
The great thing about home remedies is that you can do it yourself any time, any place — even in your dorm room. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul G. Ruff shared his favorite do-it-yourself skin care treatments with Stephanie Early Green for a Washingtonian.com article titled, “DIY: How to Make At-Home Skin Care Remedies.”
Do you want to dress up dull skin? Create your own exfoliation scrubs with sugar and sea salt. Here are the steps:
- Add 2 tablespoons of salt and one tablespoon of sugar and combine with a few drops of either olive or coconut oil to form a paste
- Essential oils can be added for aroma
- For extra hydration add a little plain yogurt or whole oatmeal
- “Apply the scrub in a gentle, circular motion for five to ten minutes, depending on the sensitivity of your skin and the coarseness of the scrub,” Green added.
