Quick easy healthy meals to make in your dorm room

When you’re hungry, you won’t have to go out for a snack if you’ve planned ahead. You can create quick, easy, healthy meals that will satisfy your hunger and make you popular among your dorm-mates. Let’s look at a few ideas about how you can satisfy your sweet tooth, your desire to crunch and other food fetishes.

Fun healthy meals in a flash

Preparing good food doesn’t mean that you have to bake. Try out these peanut butter s’mores, for example. Christy Denney explained how to whip up these chocolaty treats in her July 29, 2013, post for her blog, The-Girl-Who-Ate-Everything.com.

“The base tastes like the inside of a peanut butter cup. Then it’s smothered in marshmallow fluff, chocolate, and peanut butter cups. They actually firm up quite nicely in the fridge but as you can see these had been out for a while and were nice and gooey,” Denney said.

Ingredients for the peanut butter s’mores are:

  • butter
  • graham cracker crumbs
  • powdered sugar
  • peanut butter
  • marshmallow fluff
  • semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • mini peanut butter cups

Well, okay. Maybe the s’mores don’t qualify as healthy meals. How about “31 high-protein healthy snacks” by Kate Morin? In her June 29, 2012, post for Greatist.com, Morin listed easy and healthy meals for people on the go.

The list included:

  • cottage cheese and fruit combo
  • turkey jerky
  • trail mix: a combination of mixed fruits and nuts such as almonds and pistachios
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • nut butter on celery sticks

Then there’s the easy oatmeal raisin cookie that you can cook in the microwave. Just combine your ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl. According to Morin,“Flatten mixture into bottom of bowl and microwave on high for 45 seconds. Cool, pop it out of the bowl, and enjoy!”

More ideas for healthy meals in the dorm

If you can fit a small refrigerator, a toaster oven and a microwave in your dorm room, then you’re set. If not, find friends who have one or more appliances and pool your resources. Then check out “Cooking 101: Tips and Recipes for College Students” by Kiri Tannenbaum for Delish.com.

When you’re dying for a fresh brewed cup of coffee you can make your own by following Malkie13’s article, “One Cup Coffee Brewing, Cheap (Free!) and Easy!” for Instructables.com.

The seven-step process requires:

  • coffee mug
  • paper coffee cup
  • paper coffee filter
  • coffee
  • rubber band
  • hot water
  • knife to cut cup

This method uses the paper cup and filter to create a brew basket for your coffee. Drip water through the basket and into your coffee mug.

“It’s important that you have a bit more water than you want coffee and it should be pretty hot. Slowly and carefully pour the hot water into the top of the device, until it’s just about to the rim. It should drip brew pretty quickly, actually,” Malkie13 advised.

Let’s go shopping

Let’s put together a shopping list of the best foods and ingredients to have on hand in your dorm room. In an August 26, 2013, post for Nola.com, “Stock the perfect dorm room: Two dozen meal and snack ideas, plus a brand-specific shopping list,” Molly Kimball gives the low-down on how to stock up like an expert.

Breakfast and snack items include:

  • Greek yogurt
  • peanut butter
  • nuts
  • high protein granola bars (like Nature Valley or Kashi)

Lunch and dinner:

  • beans and bean-based soups
  • tuna
  • eggs
  • sweet potatoes

Kimball offered ideas on how to use these ingredients to create quick and healthy meals. She also provided three different versions of how to cook eggs in a mug using fat-free liquid egg substitute and the cheese of your choice.

“Spray a large microwave-safe mug lightly with nonstick spray. Add egg substitute and cheese and stir. Microwave for about a minute. Stir gently, and then microwave for another 30 – 45 seconds, until scramble is just set. Stir and enjoy,” Kimball said.
