You ask, we answer: Surviving your family over winter break

Dear J,

What’s up with the third degree from my parents? I’m headed home for the winter break and I know it will be a barrage of questions from them and my other family members. My brain is fried from finals week, and I CAN’T TAKE ANYMORE QUESTIONS! What do you suggest I do?

Ah, fried brain. I too suffer from the post-finals-week daze. Going home is a wonderful time and you must try to remember all of the good things you have to look forward to! Real food, naps, no homework, and did I mention real food already?

Try and remember all the good things and with that being said, try to have patience with the questions. Your family will always have a plethora of questions…and that will never go away. Keep in mind that they just want to be a part of your life, and they feel like they’ve been missing out for the past few months.

I know it can feel like you’re on repeat explaining your whole life to family members, but it’s because they love you! Take pride in your accomplishments and take this as an opportunity to give yourself the credit you deserve. You just had a successful semester and everyone wants to hear about it! Don’t get frustrated. Embrace it and tell your family just how awesome you are and all of the amazing things you’ve accomplished this semester!

What else do you recommend when facing family members over the holidays? Share your ideas with us in the comments.
